Ergonomic Chair - Page 2
Some of the problems associated with sitting at a desk all day are the result of the muscles in the abdomen and the back becoming weak. When a person sits at a desk all day in a normal chair, they might be slouched or laid back; they might even be hunched over the keyboard or twisted up in some other way. All these positions can cause a weakening in your core muscles, the muscles in your back and abdomen. When the muscles aren’t being used, they go soft. The muscles that are being used aren’t really the right ones and this results in an imbalance which can lead to even more injuries.
Certain types of ergonomic chairs can help prevent this degradation of the muscle groups. One example of an ergonomic chair designed for this would be the kneeling chair. This is a chair that as the name implies, is a chair that you kneel on more instead of sitting on it like a traditional chair. The way you are positioned in the kneeling chair forces you to keep your back and your abs straight and you shoulders back, which prevents the muscles from going soft. Some people also advocate the use of a Swiss Ball as a perfect ergonomic chair. Like the kneeling ergonomic chair, the sitting on a Swiss Ball forces you to keep your back and abdomen straight and you shoulders back. In addition to those things, it is also actually quite a bit of work to maintain your balance on a ball like that. Sitting on a Swiss ball all day at work could conceivably help a person not just prevent muscle atrophy, but actually to build more muscle in the core. Having strong core muscles is very important in preventing injuries associated with long hours at a desk. For example, back problems that office sitters commonly develop can probably be avoided most of the time if the muscles in the back and abdomen are kept strong.
