When people discuss ergonomics nowadays, they are often are talking about comfortable, user-friendly office furniture, such as an ergonomic computer desk. Due to the awareness of common ailments such as carpal tunnel syndrome, ergonomic computer desk, keyboards, desk chairs and even, mice are much more in demand. The reason for this is that more employees are working longer hours in front of a computer typing a large amount of copy. Traditional typewriters were often curved in such away that helped typist avoid hand and wrist fatigue. However, with the advent of the PC and the flat computer came carpal tunnel syndrome and wrist complaints. Ergonomic computer desks became items in demand to prevent or rectify such problems.

Ergonomics is not a new science; it is a combination of physiology, psychology and engineering. The need for ergonomics arose after WWII, which was a period that saw many rapid developments in all areas of design of technology. However, this development grew so quickly that many engineers did not take into account the comfort of those using the furniture. When designing an ergonomic computer desk, one keeps in mind the needs of the user rather than focusing on producing the most aesthetically pleasing design. This does not mean that ergonomic computer desks have to be hum drum or unattractive; however, the needs and the comfort of the person using the equipment is the primary consideration.

More employers nowadays understand the advantages of investing in ergonomic computer desks for their workers. If desks are designed in such a way as to prevent injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive strain disorders, that will mean greater productivity, better morale and less absenteeism. This means a reduced cost in worker’s compensation and health care. Ergonomics is quickly becoming a health and safety issue, and the Labor Departments of several states have released pamphlets guiding employers on how to make their office environments better for workers through ergonomics. In addition to investing in special furniture, such as ergonomic computer desks, employers can give their employees frequent, short breaks and encourage proper poster and maximum comfort.
