What is ergonomics?

To look at ergonomic furniture we need to first look closely at the science of ergonomics. Here’s a definition of ergonomics: The study or applied science of design and arrangement of equipment so that people can use equipment in a healthy, comfortable and efficient way. Ergonomics developed into a science around 1950. As a science, though, it relies on the research of the more established areas like engineering, physiology and psychology. That is because ergonomics looks at all these factors when designing all things ergonomic, especially furniture.

Why do we need ergonomics?

The aim of ergonomics is to have humans and technology working harmoniously together. Ergonomics is based on the fact that ‘there is no normal’. People come in all shapes and sizes and some have special physical challenges that have to be considered when designing ergonomic furniture. More companies are offering the opportunity for ergonomic education in the work place. Employers are coming to realize that even though the ergonomic education of their staff may cost the company money, initially, it is nothing in comparison to the huge losses that employers face when dealing with the costs of injured personnel.

In the health profession, nursing staffs receive instruction on the proper use of ergonomics. Hospital and other institution beds are a type of ergonomic furniture. Still, it is not enough to have ergonomic furniture available for use; employers need to make sure that workers are using them correctly. Adjustable beds are advantageous both for the person who is resting in them and the person tending that person. Nursing staff need to be reminded to raise beds to a working level, when working with a patient or changing linens.
