Ergonomic Seating - Page 2
Many companies make false claims that they are selling ergonomic seating, when they are using the term to make a profit. Unfortunately, there is a tendency to describe chairs that are swivel or in a curved shape as “ergonomic” when this concept never actually entered into the mind of the designer. There is no way of regulating the term “ergonomic” (there is no equivalent of an FDA for ergonomics), so the word can be used generously (if nonsensically) in ads. For instance, a popular item in the 80s was a so-called “ergonomic” S-shaped backless chair. This so-called ergonomic seating was actually less comfortable for most workers than conventional chairs, and no ergonomic concepts went into the design; it simply “looked” ergonomic.
How can you avoid falling into the trap of purchasing false ergonomic seating? One way is to become familiar with some concepts of ergonomics. The main theory behind designing ergonomic seating is that it is user-centered. If a curve is definitely going to make the user more comfortable because it conforms to the general curvature of the spine, than it is probably ergonomically correct. If, however, it is curved in a funky “S” shape, it might or might not be comfortable. Since comfort is the main indicator of ergonomic seating, it is important to try out your furniture before buying.
The problem with conventional office furniture is that it tends to make assumptions about the size of the typical employee (as if there is such a thing). This is the reason ergonomic seating is adjustable, so every individual user can have a chair that feels tailor made to his or her needs. Most ergonomic seating is easy to adjust in height, and sometimes, in width. Many chairs will give you the option of swiveling, rocking or remaining stationary. You can also find chairs that fit the curvature of the spine, but this will depend on the size of the user. Stools with backs are good for high desks, but stools are a special challenge when it comes to ergonomic seating, since they are rarely comfortable. Make sure that the back is comfortable and that it is adjustable.
